“I worry that my children will pick this problem up from me.”
This item is regularly checked off by parents with young children and pre-teens. Often parents see their offspring demonstrating a lack of confidence in school, anxiety with peers and discomfort with participating in community activities. They are concerned that their own lack of confidence, assertiveness and self-esteem has “rubbed off.”
Innate personality preferences do impact how we perceive and respond to life’s circumstances. However, our external environment or what we are exposed to, has a significant impact on how we come to view ourselves and navigate life’s challenges.
Not everyone has had the benefit of confident, self-assured role models. A parent’s belief and demonstrations about themselves and the world are most certainly absorbed by young minds.
However, as parents learn and begin to exhibit more confident thinking, feelings and behaviors these demonstrations become embedded in the child’s subconscious mind. At the end of the day, during developmental stages, the parent remains the most significant teacher to the future success of the child.
